In my opinion it is not so much the edit mode that is falling behind its competitors, sadly it is the develop mode that is falling behind. What I especially don't like in ACDSee's develop mode is the fact that instead of small sidecar files it generates full size jpg's in a "developed" folder, without me beeing able to do anything about it.

There is no great difference between Ultimate and Pro only layers. I really like "fluidity" in Photoshop, I would find the same similar in Acdsee; and another one to produce panoramas. Plugins need layers to work as far as I know. NIK for example works with the pro-version, but only because they add a standalone-version, which can be used as external editor.

For panoramas you could use Autostitch. It is not a plugin but a small separate tool, but it works quite good. I don't know, what fluidity does. Glen Barrington. I suspect that for those plugins that DO require some unique Photoshop feature, say auto align, as an example, you will still need to have Photoshop available. I'm not going to upgrade before the development mode has undergone some massive development. It is rather good in my opinion. I have tried Photoline32 too but found it complicated, unpredictable and under-documented. The Edit module in ACDSee shows a lot of promises but I'd call it a work in progress, especially on the mask painting part. I am, so to speak, in a transition phase And I read with interest all the opinions. For me, the best way has been to add Nik as External Editors.
